Unreal Engine

Real-time 3D creation engine by Epic Games, used for game development, film/TV production (Virtual Production, nDisplay, Sequencer), architecture, automotive, and simulation. On One Small Crawl, an Unreal Engine 5 project “Desert 5.8” rendered an 802-frame PNG sequence (“DesertSequence”) that may have been used as desert/moon-analog imagery for Scene 4/Scene 5 – though this is a discrepancy with the authoritative pipeline (see unreal-render-pipeline).

Features relevant to this production

  • Sequencer – multi-track editor for cinematic sequences, camera cuts, animation, and render output; the Desert 5.8 PNG sequence likely came from Sequencer/Windows Movie Render Queue.
  • nDisplay – distributed rendering for virtual production / multi-node rendering (used in LED-Volume stages).
  • Lumen / Nanite – dynamic global illumination and virtualized micropolygon geometry (UE5); relevant if high-detail desert/moon assets were involved.
  • Quixel Megascans – photogrammetry/library assets integrated into UE (acquired by Epic); possible source for desert texture/landscape material.
  • Blueprints – visual scripting; possible for pipeline automation, shot export, or render control.
  • Movie Render Queue – high-quality offline rendering path (vs real-time viewport); likely how the 802-frame DesertSequence PNGs were produced.

On One Small Crawl

  • “Desert 5.8” project – an Unreal Engine project at UnrealEngineProjects/Desert 5.8/ rendered an 802-frame PNG sequence DesertSequence.0000.png -> .0801.png (~33s at 24fps) found on disk in Saved/MovieRenders/. This is the only concrete Unreal evidence on the production.
  • Discrepancy – the authoritative pipeline (MovieLabs OMC export, Agent Production Bible v1, era look guide, shot list) describes the pipeline as archive + AI generation + human compositing, with NO Unreal Engine step (generation done by Gen-Image/Gen-Video agents AGT-002/003; the sc04 desert is a consumer-VHS era, not a CG render).   • Likely status – the “Desert 5.8” renders are probably an early/parallel experiment, not part of the authoritative pipeline. Treat as low-confidence background material until confirmed.
  • 2026-07-27-frames-call – snail character versions finished (blend + FBX, tested in Unreal + Blender); gas station environment progressing; Santa Monica managed by alberto-ciprian (2026-07-27-frames-call).
  • 2026-08-03-frames-call – Scene 3 gas-station animatic + AI-generated render shown by Ciprian: started from an Unreal scene; test version with placeholder content (moon landing on the television); Santa Monica blockout also presented with AI-generated buildings; “The Unreal workflow appears here as part of the production pipeline” – see unreal-render-pipeline discrepancy note (2026-08-03-frames-call).
  • 2026-08-10-frames-call – scene blocking in Unreal by gabriele-monteleone; first/last frames extracted for AI generation; shots numbered + reviewed in kitsu (2026-08-10-frames-call).
  • Gabriele Monteleone (gabriele-monteleone) is the DP and Unreal person on the production – scene blocking in Unreal on 2026-08-10-frames-call, scene blocking in Unreal on 2026-08-10-frames-call call (per tim-deussen’s page).
  • Alberto Ciprian (alberto-ciprian) – artist/LoRA/compositing; produced the first snail concept art and Unreal scene renders for Scene 3.

Relationship to authoritative pipeline

The ai-agent-pipeline (ARC retrieval + generation + human compositing) is the authoritative pipeline. The unreal-render-pipeline page documents the discrepancy. If the UE renders are confirmed as an early look-dev for sc04/sc05, this page and the concept page should be moved back to medium confidence and linked to the eras.
